Cox Automotive Research Reveals the Tax Season Affordability Gap – and Why Hertz Car Sales Has the Answer

Tax season is bringing high-intent car buyers to market, but a widening gap between what shoppers want and what they can afford is reshaping purchase decisions in 2026. New data from Cox Automotive shows that more than half of refund-driven buyers are purchasing out of necessity, and most expect to spend well below today’s average new car price of nearly $50,000. Hertz Car Sales is meeting that moment with the largest selection of near-new, model year 2025 vehicles in the U.S. used retail market – priced on average at more than half the cost of buying new.

Necessity Is Driving Tax-Season Car Buying as Shoppers Seek Affordable Vehicles, According to Cox Automotive Survey

Hertz Car Sales, an Autotrader Buy Online client, is closing the affordability gap with the U.S.’ largest selection of ‘near-new’ vehicles at half the cost of buying new*

ATLANTA, April 14, 2026Cox Automotive today released findings from its 2026 Tax Season Consumer Survey, revealing that necessity is driving the majority of this year’s vehicle buying season. Against a backdrop of higher vehicle prices and fuel costs, the survey findings help contextualize a market where affordability pressures are shaping how buyers approach vehicle decisions.

Cox’s survey findings reinforce the profile of this year’s tax season shopper:

    • Ninety-three percent of shoppers using their refund toward a vehicle had already planned to buy before filing taxes.
    • More than half (52%) cite necessity as the primary motivation.
    • Although 80% prefer to buy new vehicles, affordability constraints remain significant. Shoppers said they expect to spend less than $40,000 – well below the $50,000 average new car price – setting up potential sticker shock as market realities set in.

Available to Buy Online on Autotrader, inventory from dealers, as well as trusted partners like Hertz Car Sales are helping bridge the affordability gap consumers face by expanding access to ‘near-new’ vehicles: an emerging category of cars that are typically a year old or less. Through its on-lot inventory and Rent2Buy® vehicles sourced from its expansive rental fleet, Hertz Car Sales offers the largest selection of ‘near new’ vehicles – model year 2025 vehicles – in the used retail market. With pricing informed by Kelley Blue Book insights, Hertz Car Sales offers single-owner, well-maintained and regularly serviced vehicles that provide a compelling alternative to buying new.

“Tax season has always brought high-intent shoppers into the market, but this year their motivations look very different,” said Erin Lomax, Vice President, Operations Consumer Marketplace at Cox Automotive. “Consumers are navigating real financial constraints, and they’re looking for dependable, high value vehicles that fit real budgets. Our latest survey reinforces the importance of transparency and affordability for automotive retail.”

Affordability pressures remain top of mind. Early IRS filing season data shows the average tax refund is up 8.5% year-over-year. Yet consumers surveyed still report modest expectations, intensifying affordability concerns for in-market shoppers. Elevated new-vehicle prices, rising gas costs and interest rates continue to influence decision making, leading buyers to seek transparent pricing, predictability and trusted service histories.

“What we’re seeing at Hertz Car Sales this tax season is a buyer who knows exactly what they want: maximum vehicle for their money,” said Chris Berg, Executive Vice President of Global Fleet Management at Hertz. “Near-new inventory, vehicles a year old or less with low mileage, is proving to be the smart play in today’s market.”

As affordability pressures continue, Cox Automotive encourages its industry partners to emphasize transparent pricing, digital retailing tools, and dependable late model inventory aligned with today’s necessity driven buyer. Digital retailing and financing tools that offer upfront clarity will be essential differentiators for dealerships serving shoppers who expect higher interest rates this season.

*Largest selection of 2025 models claim is based on the number of vehicles listed for sale on competitor dealer websites as of the date of release.

  • Hertz Reveals 2026 U.S. Spring Travel Trends

Hertz Reveals 2026 U.S. Spring Travel Trends

Hertz data reveals longer spring break travel window and top destinations

New Hertz travel insights reveal how spring break travel is shifting, with travelers embracing more flexible timing and longer windows for their getaways. Instead of a single peak spring break week, Hertz data shows several high-demand periods across both March and April, opening up more opportunities for families and groups to travel and save. Additionally, one in three Hertz customers is currently renting specifically for road trips and driving vacations, reflecting renewed interest in travel by car.

    Spring Break Spans Multiple Weeks*
Spring break is no longer limited to one defined week. Hertz data reveals that travelers are heading out throughout March and April, with top pick up days forecasted to be April 9, April 17, April 23 and April 24. In March, the most popular pick up days were March 6, March 13 and March 27. This staggered demand points to smoother travel experiences for families and groups hitting the road.

Want to Save? Start Your Trip on a Wednesday or Sunday
Thursday and Friday remain the most popular pickup days for spring travel, but Hertz data shows that starting a rental on a Wednesday or Sunday offers a better chance at lower rates. Travelers can also join Hertz Gold+ for free to access member‑only rates and skip the rental counter. Plus, travelers can enjoy 20% off Pay Later rates with Hertz’s Spring Flash Sale when they book between April 6-13 and pick up between April 6-June 5.

    Warm-Weather Cities Continue to Lead
Sunshine, family‑friendly activities, and ease of planning keep warm‑weather destinations at the top of travelers’ lists. The top spring destinations based on rental car demand are:

    • Orlando
    • Los Angeles
    • Phoenix
    • Atlanta
    • Las Vegas
    • Tampa
    • Honolulu
    • Miami
    • Denver
    • Dallas

Book Early for the Best Choice
Travelers typically reserve rental cars 16 days in advance for spring trips but booking the car at the same time as flights and hotels can improve availability and support cost savings. Early bookings also provide access to a wider selection of vehicles – particularly SUVs and vans, which are among the most booked options this spring as travelers prioritize space for kids, luggage, and gear.

Tips for a Faster, Smoother Car Rental Experience

    • Locking in your gas price. At Hertz, you can prepay for refueling at pickup to lock in pricing to avoid sticker shock at the pump AND save time at return.
    • Adding your flight information to your car rental reservation. Our team actively monitors flight delays and cancellations, and adding your flight information can help protect your reservation.
    • Booking at a neighborhood location. If you’re not flying into an airport, Hertz has thousands of convenient neighborhood locations across the country.
    • Modifying your reservation on the Hertz app or Hertz.com if your travel plans get disrupted and you need to make changes.
    • Joining Hertz Gold+ (it’s free!) to skip the counter and go straight to your car when you land. This benefit can be a huge timesaver, especially after flight delays.

In sum, spring travel is expanding beyond a single week, giving travelers more flexibility and control over their plans. Whether heading to the beach, visiting family, or chasing warm weather, Hertz data shows that early planning and flexible timing can make spring getaways more seamless.

  • Hertz and UVeye Partner to Modernize Vehicle Maintenance with AI Technology

Hertz and UVeye Partner to Modernize Vehicle Maintenance with AI Technology

Hertz to deploy systems across major U.S. airports

ESTERO, Fla., April 16, 2025– Hertz, one of the world’s leading car rental companies, announced today that it is transforming its vehicle maintenance process by partnering with UVeye, a global leader in AI-driven vehicle inspection systems, to introduce advanced AI inspection to its U.S. operations.

With more than half a million vehicles around the globe, keeping vehicles in well maintained condition before, during, and after rentals is a critical priority for Hertz. Vehicle assessments in the rental industry have always relied heavily on manual inspections conducted in varying conditions. By implementing UVeye’s advanced AI-driven inspection technology, Hertz can significantly enhance the frequency, accuracy, and efficiency of its vehicle maintenance processes, ensuring reliable service, improved vehicle availability and transparency for its customers.

“With millions of customers and over 100 years of service around the world, we’re continually focused on transforming every aspect of our company and that includes how we maintain our vehicles,” said Mike Moore, EVP Technical Operations at Hertz. “We are excited to partner with UVeye to bring efficiency and greater accuracy to our maintenance process, so we can focus on our vehicles being ready when and where our customers want them.”

UVeye’s AI-powered camera systems and machine learning algorithms enable real-time, automated inspections of a vehicle’s body, glass, tires, and undercarriage. The technology enables improvements in safety and vehicle availability by detecting maintenance issues with unprecedented speed and precision. UVeye’s tire treadwear system captures high-resolution images that are instantly analyzed to determine whether a tire needs replacement, reducing the need for manual checks and ensuring timely, proactive service. By complementing manual checks with UVeye’s technology, customers will enjoy more efficient and transparent automated checks when picking up and dropping off their vehicles.

“Hertz is setting a new standard for vehicle maintenance and fleet management in the rental industry, and we’re thrilled to partner with them,” said Amir Hever, CEO and Co-Founder of UVeye. “Our AI-driven inspection systems complement manual checks with consistent, data-backed assessments completed in seconds.”

Starting in Atlanta at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which was the first to be equipped with UVeye systems, Hertz and UVeye are now rolling out installations across major U.S. airport locations, with deployment expected by the end of the year. This marks another step in Hertz’s broader strategy to harness cutting-edge technology that improves operational efficiency and elevates the customer experience. By transforming how vehicles are assessed and maintained, Hertz is building a more transparent, reliable, and tech-forward future for car rentals—starting with the basics.
